Membership in the Tye Preston Memorial Library is separate from membership in the Friends of Tye Preston Memorial Library.

TPML receives most of its funding from 1/2 of 1% of local sales taxes collected within the Library District and cannot do fundraising activities.  To enable the library to offer items, programs and services which might not otherwise be covered by operating cost funds, the Friends of Tye Preston Memorial Library (a 501(c)3 organization) raise funds and accept donations on the library’s behalf.  The revenue raised by Friends membership dues, fundraising activities, and bookstore sales are used by TPML to develop and maintain programs enriching the educational and cultural needs of our community.

Donations received by the Friends are more than a one-time tax deductible gift.  A portion of each donation, fundraising event fee, bookstore purchase or membership dues received is put into the Friends of TPML Library Endowment Fund to secure a return in the library’s future.  As the endowment fund grows year over year, it ensures that the library will have the funds to plan for and implement future improvements.

What can Friends do to help the library grow?  Participation in Friends can be as simple as becoming a member or renewing the annual, tax deductible membership.

For those wanting more involvement, bring your voice and ideas to the Friends Member/Business meetings.  Meeting dates and times will be announced via email to members and posted in the library’s Newsletter.  Other options include:

  • work an upcoming fundraising or membership event to help with registration or set up/take down

  • staff the Friends bookstore

  • assist with children’s programs

  • be a Reader Weeder keeping the grounds weed-free

  • make baked goods

  • shop local to support Friends Business Members

  • participate in this year’s Big Give

Recent examples of how TPML used funds raised by the Friends include the StoryWalk® Project and the outdoor musical instruments enjoyed by children and adults alike.
